They were available with CD-ROM, DVD-ROM, CD-RW or Combo (DVD-ROM/CD-RW) drives, so the OP's description of "CD-ROM" could be accurate. The fact that you see "ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive" does *not* actually mean that unit is capable of DVD playback. "ATAPI Optical Storage drive" would probably be more appropriate message, as the kernel doesn't really care to tell apart CD-ROM from DVD-ROM units, there is no need for that [from kernel viewpoint].
